Video Tour: Accessible Car and Adaptive Driving for CMT
Individuals with CMT may experience struggles or find barriers when it comes to driving a car, especially as they experience progression with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. In this video, Bernadette shares how she made her home more accessible with automatic doors, a ramp, and an extended driveway to allow her to get in and out of her house and into her handicap van.
Watch the video to see a tour of her side-entry conversion van, including her seatbelt extender that makes it easier to put on her seatbelt, how she uses adaptive hand controls for accelerating, and braking, and her adaptive steering device. She also discusses difficulties she faces, like rolling the window up and down, turn signals, and windshield wipers, and some future changes she’ll make to her van as her CMT symptoms progress.
